Forum Upgraded!!!

Post by Omnidon » Sun May 13, 2007 4:53 am

Shortly following the move of the battlegrounds website to my server, I am pleased to announce that the forum has been heavily modified (primarily with the Categories Hierarchy mod) to include TONS of new features.
  • These features include:
  • Subforums (!!!)
  • Attachments (File Uploads!!!)
  • Calendar Events
  • Increased Security / Spam Protection
  • A much more powerful permissions system
  • Global Announcements
  • Custom Profile Field Support
  • and more!
Enjoy and tell me if you find any bugs!

The site is looking really nice. I like the new features and layout.

I may be missing it... but where are the active bug reports? I looked under the Bug Tracker section and only saw posts in the Fixed sub forum.

EDIT:

Nevermind... wasn't scrolling low enough in the Bug Tracker section and only saw the sub forums when I entered that section. Just need to get use to the layout.

Thanks for upgrading the forums, Omnidon. It may take some of us a little getting used to, but the changes are great and should make for a better forum experience for everyone.

I'm looking forward to seeing people make use of the attachments feature.

I will probably use the Calendar feature for scheduling BRPG demos, as soon as I figure out how it works.

And anything that improves security and helps fight spam and bot accounts is excellent, since the less time I have to devote to keeping the forums clean, the more I'll be able to focus on software development and customer support.

It's called a "Topic Calendar", meaning it stores the events in the posts table. Just create a new thread and you'll see the option to set it as an event with a specific time and duration.

Oh that reminds me, this mod adds image verification on guest posting, which means that we can try enabling anonymous posting again if you want. I know you were very reluctant to turn it off in the first place.

If so, which forums would you like to have it on?

Sure, go ahead and allow that on the "Support" section and the "User Feedback" section, please.

On the old board, I was able to change the way the forum appeared (background and text color). On this version, I can't work out how to change it (I just can't read white text on black). Does the option exist now?

I'm not seeing anywhere to change the Forum theme, like the old forums had. Hopefully Omnidon will know of a way.

I'm also having a hard time editing my posts, because it's a black cursor on a black background. I had somehow solved that in the old forums. Could you reinstate my fix, Omnidon?

I just enabled the ability to switch your template.
(heruca, it's under Configuration+ --> Board Layout)

After the conversion, Override User's Choice was already selected so I assumed that was how it was set on the old board. (Personally I love subBlack).

Speaking of which, if anyone finds any good templates they want to add to the forum, just say so ;-)

These are the templates that have already been converted for this mod, but if there's another sub-Family one that many of you want, I can make a conversion.

I'll compare the old CSS to the new one and see if I can find what you did.

I, however, am not getting a black cursor on firefox.

EDIT: I found what you did ;-)
You just changed all the input boxes white. It's fixed now.

I'm still seeing a black text field when composing or editing posts.

I noticed in Firefox, the insertion cursor is white, so it's not an issue. But in Safari, I still can't see the cursor.

Never mind. I cleared the cache and now the text field is white. Thanks.

I just made it so that it will more quickly forward you to your post after posting rather than leaving you hanging at that "Post successful" screen.

Added the ability for forum moderators to merge topics.

Look for a button like this one at the bottom of topics:
Image

The topic you start in is added to the end of the topic you then select.

EDIT: Actually, looks like when you merge a topic, it sorts the posts in order of their post time. (like any other thread)

This feature does not support reordering posts within a topic.

Added some more search options and a jumpbox to contain them.

"View posts since last visit" now acts like vanilla phpBB2's feature by that name. It really will detect all posts since your last login. I personally like to use that search option as a bookmark, as it is a fast way to view all new posts.

I renamed the previous search feature by that name to "View unread posts". It checks a cookie in your browser to see if there are any posts you haven't read.
Now that we have other search options, I have set it to keep this cookie between sessions by default, but you can change that in your profile.

Lastly, I added an option to "View posts from last 24 hours", which is rather self-explanatory.
