MacGameFiles listing

Post by heruca » Wed Jun 07, 2006 2:52 pm

BRPG is now listed at the MacGameFiles site. Perhaps this will draw in some new users.

Anyone that hasn't pre-ordered BRPG but still wants to play with the latest version can snag it there. I'm just not sure that the few new features and bug fixes are enough to justify the 80MB download. The choice is yours.

Wow! Over 80 downloads from there and it hasn't even been 12 hours since I posted it. :D

Oops! This extra exposure has been a little too successful. With 250 downloads from that site alone in just 3 days, I've already burned through most of my June bandwidth on this server in just the first 10 days of the month. So I'm in the process of removing my listing and updating it with one where MacGameFiles does the actual hosting of the file (this is a new service they're offering).

So I think that when v1.0 is released, I may have to initially ask folks to go download it from them, so that this site doesn't max out on bandwidth and go down until July.

On the plus side, pre-orders have picked up significantly over the last week. :D

That means more potential players for everyone's games, of course.

How much bandwidth did it use?
I have tons of extra bandwidth if you need help hosting stuff.

Over 80% already.

The problem is that the link is already posted on that site, and I have no quick way to change it (it seems the staff at MGF is off until Monday). So I may have to pull the file and people will be faced with a broken link, at which point they're unlikely to ever try it again.

Likewise, according to my host I have "unlimited" bandwidth (I suspect the only way to test that is to post a very popular file!), so I would be only too happy to host it as well.

I appreciate the offers. I might take you up on it for the v1.0 release.

I have another idea. You can use .htaccess to forward them from that URL to a different one.

I'll tell you about it on YIM.

-edit-
I'll be AFK a bit. I'll turn my sound up though, message me when you get the chance.

Ok well you're obviously busy so I've set it all up for you.

Paste the following in a text file and name it simply ".htaccess"
Without the quotes and nothing before the dot.

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://battlegroundsgames.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://battlegroundsgames.com$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.battlegroundsgames.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.battlegroundsgames.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(zip)$ http://allinyourmind.net/brpg/ [R,NC]
Put that in your root directory and it will automatically take anyone who clicks the MacFiles link to a download page I've got set up for you on my site.

It will also catch anyone who attempts to download any zip file from the site.

-edit-
Everything is working! :D

New Download Page is http://allinyourmind.net/brpg/

Update: To preserve the dwindling bandwidth, the Release Candidate is now being hosted on Omnidon's server.

Since I'll be away for a week or so, and I haven't been able to finish the revised User Manual prior to my trip, there won't be anything new available until I return on the 20th. Let's hope the site doesn't go down before then. If it does, don't be concerned, it'll be back up soon.

See you all when I get back.

Jeez, I got one bad review (the ONLY review) at MacGameFiles and now hardly anyone is downloading it.

I don't think the reviewer understood what he was looking at (he was probably expecting an RTS videogame like Warcraft, or something), since he called BRPG a "game".

Would anyone care to post a review there, to offset the damage a bit?

Here's the link, again:

Thanks, Omnidon. Great write-up. It should clear up any confusion.

How dare they write a bad review LOL
I will post one as soon as I get time (can't go there at work).

Heruca: remind me to do this when you see me on YIM ;)
