BRPG v1.4 beta released

Post by heruca » Fri Jan 16, 2009 11:45 pm

BRPG v1.4 is now available for download. It is to be considered in beta status for the time being.

v1.4 has had major changes to the file & directory hierarchy, and has been developed with a newer version of Macromedia Director MX 2004. It fixes a number of bugs that were found in v1.3f, and also adds some important new features that were requested by users.

The main features of this update are:
¢ Upgraded the authoring environment to Macromedia Director MX 2004 v10.1
¢ Reorganized the file structure to avoid clutter in the BRPG root folder
¢ Added support for Flash units that can communicate with BRPG
¢ Added a contextual popup menu for multi-unit selections
¢ Unit labels can now be tracked in the Turn Sequencer
¢ Text labels created with the Draw Tool can now be edited.
¢ Added a number of new Preference settings and Map Settings
¢ Bug fixes

The format for Encounters and Deployments has changed since v1.3f. Encounters created in older versions of BRPG will be automatically updated to the new format when loaded. The format for Deployments has also changed, and Deployment files will also be automatically updated to the new format when loaded.

This is a full install, and no patch version is planned, due to major changes to the file and folder hierarchies.

Download BRPG v1.4 here:
Windows version (124.7 MB)
Mac version (129.5 MB)

Installation instructions are included in each download.

Although the ReadMe file with the information below is contained in the v1.4 download, some people might find it useful to see the changes prior to downloading the zip file.

Version History:
v1.4

¢ Created a nicer icon for the BRPG executables, and for the BG button on the program's interface.
¢ Created a new, faster-launching executable for BRPG (for both Mac and Windows OS).
¢ Change: Reorganized the files that are included with BRPG in order to place support files in a subfolder, so as not to clutter the root folder.
¢ Added a "Disabled Text Macros" folder inside the "Text Macros" folder.
¢ Added a "Disabled Turn Sequencer Settings" folder inside the "Turn Sequencer Settings" folder.
¢ Updated BRPG's authoring environment from Macromedia Director MX 2004 (v10.0) to Macromedia Director MX 2004 (v10.1).
¢ Added support for Flash units (e.g. mini-apps) that can communicate with BRPG.
¢ Added a contextual popup menu for multi-unit selections, to make it possible to issue commands or to make changes to many units at once.
¢ Units may now be owned by "Everyone" (i.e., any player can move the unit and view or edit its data in the Turn Sequencer).
¢ Change: The first time the "Roll Dice" button on the Chat window is pressed in a game session, it will simply open the Dice Roller window. After that, clicking on the "Roll Dice" button in the Chat window will show a popup menu allowing you to load or auto-roll any of your dice macros. This change was necessary due to a technical limitation in Director.
¢ Change: Clicking on the Text Macro button in the Chat window now produces a popup menu listing all the text macro files available. This should make it easier and faster to access any given text macro.
¢ Encounter files now store the name of the Turn Sequencer settings that should be used for that Encounter. Those settings are automatically loaded along with the Encounters, provided the settings file is still available.
¢ Added a Preferences setting that determines whether text labels on figures should be shown or not. Even when labels are hidden, they can still be viewed by placing the mouse cursor over a unit.
¢ Added a Preferences setting that determines whether units are automatically hidden after deploying or cloning them.
¢ Added a Preferences setting that allows a GM Client with Floating Licenses to automatically assign a Floating License to any unlicensed client that logs in, without the GM being asked.
¢ Added a Preferences setting that determines which Turn Sequencer settings to use when BRPG is launched. This may be overridden on a per-Encounter basis.
¢ Added Preference settings to determine the default map scale for new maps.
¢ Added a Preferences setting that determines whether closing the FoW panel should disable any active FoW tool.
¢ Added a Preferences setting that determines whether closing the Draw panel should disable any active Draw tool.
¢ Added controls to the Map Settings panel that allow the GM to specify whether the grid overlay and the snap-to-grid functions should be forced on, forced off, or be left up to each connected client.
¢ Change: The text in text labels created with the Text Label tool in the Draw panel can now be edited after they are created, by selecting the "Edit Label Text..." command from the unit's contextual popup menu.
¢ Change: The "Snap to Grid" command on the BG button's popup menu is now available to players as well, not just the GM.
¢ The "Deploy Figure" and "Deploy Object" panels now have two new checkboxes that allow the GM to decide whether or not to apply the current unit settings as the default, and whether or not to apply the current unit settings to units that are already deployed on the map.
¢ Made the "Deploy Figure" panel taller, to account for the extra controls it now needs to display.
¢ Added a new option to the first screen of the Turn Sequencer Setup Wizard that allows the GM to specify whether or not a unit's text labels should be displayed in the Notes column of the Turn Sequencer.
¢ Updated the file format for Encounters.
¢ Updated the file format for Deployments.
¢ Updated all the Encounter and Deployment files that are included with BRPG to the new format.
¢ Optimization: Loading of Encounters, the Undo function, multiplayer game-state updates, and initial loading of BRPG are now a bit faster.
¢ Reorganized the default list of text labels into three categories (Actions, States, and Posture) and added a few additional labels.
¢ Change: Removed all the selection-related commands from the BG button's popup menu. They were deemed redundant and were cluttering up the menu, especially when the Command panel isn't open.
¢ Change: The "Charts & Tables" folder in BRPG's root folder has been renamed "Library".
¢ Change: Moved the "Toggle Grid", "Snap-To-Grid", and "Resend Missing Map Pieces" commands from the BG button's popup menu to the map's popup menu, which is a more logical place to access those commands, anyway.
¢ Change: A sound no longer plays when units are placed on the map or cloned.
¢ Updated the information on the Help screen to reflect recent changes.
¢ Bug fix: Rotating a figure while Fog of War is enabled is now smoother and faster.
¢ Bug fix: Flipping a unit horizontally or vertically wasn't updating the unit on connected clients.
¢ Bug fix: BRPG no longer saves Encounters in the "Encounters" folder if you had elected to save the file elsewhere.
¢ Bug fix: BRPG no longer saves Deployments in the "Deployments" folder if you had elected to save the file elsewhere.
¢ Bug fix: Alternate tokens (from the token-swapping feature) are now requested from the GM Client if they are not already available locally.
¢ Bug fix: Media assets that come preloaded in BRPG and are not purge-able are now excluded from external media bundles.
¢ Bug fix: Hiding the grid wasn't working the very first time the [G] hotkey was pressed during a session.
¢ Bug fix: The automatic updating of Deployment files was only working properly when updating from the very prior format. It should now work properly even with files that are several formats out-of-date.
¢ Bug fix: The unit selection marquee now works even if the circle drawing tool was the last drawing tool that had been used.
¢ Bug fix: The line drawing tool and the text label tool can now be set to locked mode on a Mac, for repeated line drawing operations.
¢ Bug fix: The rectangle drawing tool now works properly with snap-to-grid enabled, and takes the line thickness into account to keep shapes properly centered on the grid.
¢ Bug fix: The line drawing tool no longer shifts a drawn line out of place as soon as the draw action is completed.
¢ Bug fix: Addressed several situations in which the active unit would be out of sync between the GM, the Adversary Player, and other players.
¢ Bug fix: Hostile units now appear in the players' Turn Sequencer.
¢ Bug fix: Portrait-style figures with a triangle-shaped hex base are now properly centered on the base when the unit is rotated.
¢ Bug fix: Assets from artpacks are no longer included in exported media bundles.
¢ Bug fix: Automatic naming of units (during mass-deployments or while cloning an existing unit) now works properly even if the original unit name ends in a number.

A serious bug has been found in v1.4 which makes it entirely unusable for multiplayer games.

v1.4 should be considered only suitable as a "sneak preview" of some new features that are in the works, but only for local use by the GM, with no one else logging into the game session.

I will try to release v1.4a sometime in the next 10 days or so to address this issue.
