Post by nemo7 » Sun Mar 24, 2013 7:21 am

Hello there gents! I am trying to open the BRPG v 1.6m but when I dclick the Battlegrounds RPG Edition.exe this message pops up: "goMU V2.20:Xtra(s) missing". I am using Win7. Any ideas? Cheers

Welcome, nemo7.

You have to unzip the BRPG archive (use "Extract All..." on Windows) before you can run the program. Did you forget to do so?

Also make sure you haven't moved the EXE file out to your desktop or something. It needs to stay in the BRPG folder. Feel free to create an alias/shorcut to the EXE file on your desktop.

Hello Heruca, you've done a fabulous job here mate! I am an "Up Front" maniac so I tried to play the game. I extract the BRPG 1.6m in a folder named "BRPG" on my desktop BUT when I doubleclick the BRPG exe (inside the folder) the previously mentioned message pops up. What am I doing wrong?

It seems this issue came up once before, but it was never ascertained what was wrong.

Can you try unzipping from a freshly re-downloaded file to some other location on your hard drive?

Also, note that you won't be able to try out Up Front (or any other game conversion) properly with just the BRPG Demo.

Thanks for the reply. I ll try unzipping from a freshly re-downloaded file to some other location. Would you be kind enough to inform me what I shall need to try out the Up Front?

You would need a Battlegrounds Gaming Engine (aka BGE) license. The $15 two-player version would suffice.

Download either BGE v1.3 or BGE v1.4 from the Downloads page.

Although Up Front can be played using BRPG, I recommend BGE, which is better suited and less expensive. Unless you also intend to play RPGs, of course, in which case you would want BRPG instead.

If I get it right I have to purchase the BGE licence first in order to get BGE 1.4 (and Up front) work without any glitch. Am I correct?

Pretty much. It doesn't matter if you download the software first or purchase the license first. Entering the license code (which you'll receive after purchase) unlocks the software, so the free Demo is the only download you need, aside from the free Up Front game conversion.

Once caveat, though: Up Front is a somewhat complicated game, and the digital conversion for BGE is also rather complex to use when compared to other game conversions. So I don't recommend the digital version of Up Front as a means to learn how to play Up Front; it's intended for people who already know the rules to Up Front.

I am lost :D I ve played the game in my time (late 80s), I have somewhere the printed manual IIRC. I suppose (hope) I can bring it back to life. Am I good? Purchasing the license means that I get rid this "goMU V2.20" problem? (sorry to bother you mate:lol:)

As long as you've played Up Front before, even if it was 20 years ago, you should be OK. You probably mastered the game mechanics back in the day, and whatever rules you've forgotten should quickly come back to you after one or two plays.

No, by no means will a license solve that problem. That is something you need to resolve before purchasing anything. Guess I assumed it was already resolved.

Did my prior suggestions not help? Or have you simply not gotten around to trying them yet?

No luck dear heruca. Unzipping from a freshly re-downloaded file (BGE v1_3 Win this time) on my hard drive. The same message pops up again...

Have you tried using a different unzipping utility?

Are you on an admin user account?

Have you tried with Windows 7's built-in unzipping utility, as recommended in the User Manual, and in my first reply to this thread?

Do you by chance have Norton 360 installed?

No I am not using Norton. Before the above mentioned message there is a message about a "Tactical 1334 missing".

That's not a reference to any file that comes with BGE. I have no idea what that is. Nor does Google, apparently.

I will try an alternate method of getting BGE to you. Perhaps the browser you used to download the installer did something odd to the Zip file.

Thanks mate, but no luck again: " goMU v2.20:Xtra(s) missing! - SWA Import Export.x32 The above required Xtra(s) are missing. If it's a projector you are creating, go to modify>movie>xtras, add the Xtra(s) to the list and select 'include in projector' "

It sounds like BGE/BRPG is not finding the Xtras folder, which resides alongside the executable. Are you by any chance using a case-sensitive file system? If so, try changing the name of the "Xtras" folder to "xtras", and try launching the program again. Read this forum thread.
