There are two types of game tokens.
1) Those that designate a specific effect and are public. These can be temporary or permanent. Typically identifying an area that is locked down, a marker for ranged attacks, a marker for attacks of opportunity, etc.
2) Those that are hidden (flipped upside down) till they are explored. Some games will have an explored token made public to all and other games the exploring player leaves it private (required to remember what the token is) till the token is flipped and made public via some form of activation.
