BGE v1.8 beta released

Post by heruca » Wed Aug 15, 2018 9:49 pm

BGE v1.8 is now available for download. It is to be considered in beta status for the time being.

The main features of this update are:
• Added a Zoom Widget, which appears above the Views palette and allows for fast zooming with a high degree of control
• Added a Unit Widget, which appears above the Views palette and allows moving and rotating the selected unit/s quickly and easily
• Added an option to "Use Large Fonts" on the Turn Sequencer (useful on high resolution displays)
• Added drag-and-drop support for bitmaps, Game Files, and Deployment files
• Added an animation (Fire) to the program, which was previously only available in BRPG
• Lots of little optimizations, enhancements, performance boosts, customization options, and extra polish
• Numerous bug fixes

There should now be format parity between BGE v1.8 and BRPG v1.9. Therefore, Game Files and Encounter files should be interchangeable between these programs. The same is true for Deployment files.

This is a Full Install.

Download BGE v1.8 here:
Windows version (54.9 MB)
No Mac version of BGE v1.8 is available. BGE has been discontinued on the Mac platform.

I hope you enjoy this update. It's a big one. It's also, sadly, the very last release of BGE v1.x. Hopefully, v2 (BGU) will be developed someday.
_________________________________________________________

Although a ReadMe file with the information below is contained in the BGE v1.8 download, some people might find it useful to see the changes prior to downloading the zip file.

Version History:
v1.8

• Added a Zoom Widget, which appears above the Views palette. This widget allows for fast zooming with a high degree of control. Use of the widget is optional, as it can be disabled (permanently, or just for that session) by anyone who finds it obtrusive. When enabled, the Zoom Widget only appears when the mouse cursor is near it, and only if no unit is currently selected.
• Added a Unit Widget, which appears above the Views palette. This widget allows moving and rotating the selected unit/s quickly and easily. Use of the widget is optional, as it can be disabled (permanently, or just for that session) by anyone who finds it obtrusive. When enabled, the Unit Widget only appears when the mouse cursor is near it, and only if one or more units are selected. The central area of the Unit Widget changes depending on the current grid type (square or hex). Engaging the Caps Lock key also switches the central portion to allow for “Nudging” units one pixel at a time, or as long as one of the directional buttons is pressed.
• Added two new options to the “Session-Specific Settings” submenu, to allow enabling or disabling the new widget controls individually.
• Added a new option to the "Session-Specific Settings" submenu, called "Use large fonts in Turn Sequencer". Enabling it does exactly what you'd expect. Users of high-definition displays should benefit from this option, as the smaller default text size can be hard to read for some users.
• Added a Windows OS-only feature that allows the host to drag-and-drop a Deployment file or a Game File onto the game table window to load that file. Multiple Deployment files may be loaded simultaneously in this manner.
• Added drag-and-drop support for bitmaps (JPG, BMP, PNG, and other formats) dropped onto the game table window. Dropping a single bitmap creates a Component at default (50%) size, but if the graphic has been used before, the Component will be created using default values, instead. Components are created by default, but they can be transformed into Minis if needed. Dropping multiple bitmaps creates multiple Components, staggered 1 cell apart. Dropping a folder, or multiple folders, will instead import the media it contains, as happens with the Bulk Import feature. Flash media and audio clips are also supported by this new drag-and-drop functionality. You can also drag-and-drop individual bitmaps from a browser window into the game table window (ideal for spur-of-the moment token searches on the web).
• Sequential drag-to-select operations can now be performed with the Shift key pressed in order to select many non-contiguous units.
• Added an animation (Fire) to the program which was previously only available in BRPG.
• Added additional verification regarding the use of commercial artpacks.
• Change: The “Rotate” submenu is only available if the Unit Widget has been disabled.
• Bug fix: Auto-naming has been improved for units created from a media file whose filenames end in a number without a space before it (e.g., "X2", "A-3").
• Bug fix: Rotating units (whether with the mouse's scroll wheel or via menu-driven commands) could cause the program to occasionally lock up on Windows PCs.
• Bug fix: Unit rotation with modifier keys should now work correctly on Windows PCs.
• Bug fix: Gameboard thumbnails were sometimes being displayed “off-center” on the “Load Game Board” panel.
• Bug fix: The automated server-based artpack registration feature is fixed.
• Developer-only: Added the ability to inherit properties from the prior token, and to adjust the token offsets using the keyboard.

Hi Hernan,

"I hope you enjoy this update. It's a big one. It's also, sadly, the very last release of BGE v1.x. Hopefully, v2 (BGU) will be developed someday."

This is a sad, sad day but I understand the decision. I really like this program, using it most every day. I'm all in for v2 if it ever gets off the ground. Take care.

Randy
